My name is Pip Johnston, I'm 23 and I have recently started up my
illustration website http://www.pipjohnston.co.uk.
Drawing is fundamental to everything I do. Straight from school I
enrolled at Central Saint Martins, following my foundation course with a degree in Fashion Design and Marketing. Ironically it wasn’t necessarily a love of fashion that lead me to specialize in that field; it was a fascination with the female form and the intensity of a face. I did however design at Derek Lam in New York before starting up my illustration website, as well as working as a stylist in London. Gaining those experiences proved
pivotal to my illustrations-learning how much detail to add, and what to leave bare.
My primary tools are very basic-paper, pencil and watercolour. If I feel a piece needs more of an edge, I will introduce collage or photoshop. I have been busy doing personal commissioned works in the last few months, for invitations, table illustrations, parties, etc, which has allowed me to explore a wider field outside the fashion genre. Simultaneously doing works for Computer Arts Magazine and Nylon - so a real mix of briefs and exciting challenges. |
